Transcript: | MOBILE, Ala., June 27. – The special sent out from Mobile that a negro, Tom Brown, was hanging to a tree near Point Clair, Baldwin county, in a teribly mutilated condition, and mortally injured, is exagerated. A negro named Tom Parker, was brought to jail at Daphne. He claimed that he had been hung up to extort a confession of robbery. He did not appear to be injured. Later swelling of the neck showed that there was some truth in his statement. The swelling subsided. No mutilation; no danger to the life of the negro. The sheriff has arrested two men, Maurice Staplton, and W. M. Swayne, whom Parker charges with stringing him up. |
