George enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 25 July 1863. Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was mustered as a Private in Tarrent’s Battery, Alabama Light Artillery. On 24 August 1863 he was appointed 3rd Corporal. On 16 December 1864, George was captured at Nashville, Tennessee. He died at Cumberland General Hospital in Nashville on 14 Janaury 1865 from a shell wound, right knee joint amputated. He was originally buried in the Nashville City Cemetery, grave #11225 but was exhumed after the war and reinterred in the confederate section of Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Married twice. First to Frances Maria Grant, who died in 1848, on 25 October 1847 in Noxubee County, Mississippi. From this union they had one son, Reuben F. Neilson who died in Texas 1865. He secondly married Elizabeth Aylett Croswell on 22 Oct 1850 in Duncanville, Dallas County, Alabama.
