A Negro Treed and Shot to Death–He Attacked Two Woman Who Escaped From His Grasp.
Birmingham, Ala., July 5. News was received here yesterday of the attempted outrage of two women near Jasper, some 30 miles from here, by a negro. Sunday morning the negro was passing along the road by the house of the Brickwells, a few miles from Jasper. Miss Brickwell, a young woman was in the lane near the house. The negro caught her by the arm, but her screams caused him to run off and she ran into the house. A few hours afterwards the negro crossed the field of William Kilgore. Mrs. Kilgore was gathering berries. The negro caught her. She screamed so loudly that it brought her husband to her assistance. The negro became frightened and ran away. The husband followed him to Ulack Warrior Creek and fired several shots at him. With the assistance of dogs the chase was continued and yesterday morning at an early hour the negro was found in a tree. There was no less than 200 men and numerous dogs on nis trail. As soon as discovered vollev after volley were poured into him, tearing his body to pieces. The negro’s name is not Known.
