Birmingham Ala.., May 29- Seventeen miles eas of Holmes Gap, in Sand Mountain, S.V Jones a prominent farmer, was visited by whitecaps night before last and beaten half to death with hickory switches.  They broke down the door and dragged him out while two of the held his wife.  He thinks it was the work of his neighbors who ran an illicit distillery, which was recently raided by officers.  They thought Jones gave them away.

Jeff Thomas, a negro who assaulted J.V. Neal at Townley.  Walker county, a week ago, was captured last night and is supposed to have been lynched after midnight.  He was in charge of a posse waiting the arrival of the sheriff, who when he came discovered the negro gone.  All the captors would say was that Thomas had escaped to hell.
