They called attention to the fact that the deaths of Pippen and Harden comprised the first lynching in this county since 1884 when a negro was taken from the city jail and hanged. In that case, 40 years ago, the negro was identified as one who attempted to ravish a while girl. He was hanged to a tree on Greensboro Avenue at Ninth Street. |
