Mobile, April 6. – Walter Clayton, a negro who was serving time at the Hand Lumber Company for manmanslaughter late Saturday afternoon criminally assaulted Mrs. Joseph White aged 20 years, and was lynched by a mob of 75 men outside the limits of Bay Minette. Clayton entered the woman’s house, choked Mrs. White and accomplished his purpose. He threatened to repeat his crime and kill Mrs. White but her brother-in-law came at an opportune time.

The negro returned to the convict camp and was arrested and started to jail, handcuffed to a deputy. As the officer and the prisoner approached the town, seveuty-five men arose from behind the fen from behind a fence and tto kcharge of the negro. They dragged the negro and the offiver a long distance before it was discovered that they were handcuffed together. They were separated and the negro taken to the place of execution.
