Transcript: | WM. B. POPE, of Columbus, was shot and dangerously wounded by a negro named Lewis Austin, at Alta, Ala., on the 29th ult. In walking through the cars Mr. Pope was jostled by the im- pudent negro, and when spoken to about it made an insulting reply, and attempt- ed to strike Pope with a pair of brass- knucks, but was provented by bystanders. As Mr. Pope got out of the cars at Alta the negro shot him twice, and took to his heels. He was followed by a crowd of citizens, captured and hung.-Bran- – don Republican. WM. B.
