Lynching in Alabama

Since 1877 there have been over 400 documented cases of racial terror lynchings in the state of Alabama. These people--Black men, women, and children--died twice to history, once when their lives were taken by lynch mobs and again when their stories were hidden from the historic record. This memorial is an ongoing effort to recover those stories. Every year, this list will grow, and we will gain more knowledge about this painful past. We hope that by sharing their names and their stories, this project will help all those who read it work together to bring justice to these lives lost to lynching.
