5 FRAMED IN ‘BAMA MURDER TUSCALOOSA, Ala., July 20 – The Alabama legal lynch machin- ery which has resulted in the fram- ing of two Negroes on charges of criminal assault and murder, two on charges of being “accessories,” and one on a harge of “obstructing the law’s investigation,” was re- vealed by a International Labor Defense investigation into the charges laid against them in the murder of Viola Maddox, a white girl, June 12. Dan Pippen, Jr., and Ernest Clarke, Negro boys, are charged with assault and murder; A. T. Harden, 15, and Will Jimison are charged with being accessories and Dan Pippen, Sr., with obstruting and interfering with the investiga- tion of the officers. All five face trial July 17. Viola Maddox left her home about nine o’clock on Monday, June 12. She was reported missing on Tuesday, and a search instituted Wednesday, when her body was found in a ravine. A coroner’s in- quest established the time of death at about 9:30 Monday morning. Rumors and circumstantial evi- dence circulating immediately after discovery of the body, implicated several white men, and were said to point definitely to murder by one of the girl’s men friends. On Friday, June 16, however, a white man who owed Dan Pippen, Jr. money for wo.D done for him told police heh ad seen him in the neighborhood of the crime on Mon- day. Pippen was arrested, When Dan Pippen. Sr., stated that his son had been working with him and Willie Jimison, also a Ne- gro, all day Monday in Jimison’s fleld, he was arrested by the sheriff and charged with obetructing and interfering wite the investigation. Next police arrested A. T. Har- den, on the ground that he was a member of the same church sing- ing club as young Pippen. The sheriff announced that Harden ac- eused Pippen of the crime, and said he was looking on.
