Mobile, Ala., April 7. – The fate of Walter Clayton, the negro “trusty” convict who criminally assaulted Mrs. Joseph White, of Rosington, Ala., Saturday last and who was taken from the sheriff while the latter was escorting him to jail, is shrouded in mystery. Conflicting answers are given to questions asked and surrounding the whole are doubts in the case. The citizens of Bay Minette are very silent concerning the affair and of those that consent to talk, some express the belief that Clayton has been lynched and his body done away with.
