Mobile, Ala., April 7. – A special to the Register from Bay Minette says: Sheriff Booth and his party of twenty-five searchers for the body of Walter Clayton, the negro lynched near here Saturday night for criminal assault on Mrs. Joseph White, have returned from the search and announced failure in their quest. He said the party found one shoe of the negro and an empty whiskey bottle near a charred stump that had been set on fire by the lynchers. The ashes around the stump were searched for traces of bones, but none were found. The searching party traced the lynchers to this stump, twelve miles south of here but lost the scent there and were unable to pick it up again. It has developed that the lynching party had towels and handkerchiefs tied around their mouths to disguise their voices.
