LAY LYNCHING TO OFFICIALS Alabama Court Authorities Accused by Defense League TUSCALOOBA, Ala.-A Grand Jury was summoned today to in- vestigate the lynching of two young Negroes charged with the murder of a white girl. International Labor Defense at- torneys who were threatened with lynching and forbidden to serve as counsel for the Negroes, charged local officials with responsibility for the lynchings. Judge Henry B. Fos- ter said he would order a ‘sincere and thorough” investigation. Three Negroes-Dan Pippen, Jr., eighteen, A. T. Harden, sixteen, and Elmore Clark, twenty-eight-al! charged with the murder of Vau- dine Maddox, eighteen. were taken from deputy sheriffs who were re- moving them to Birmingham for protection. The bodies of Pippen and Harden were found beside the highway early Sunday. riddled with bullets. Clark was not found and authorities thought the mob had told him to leave the state. The Negroes were handcuffed to- gether when taken by the mob. The handcuff that held Clark to Pippen had been unlocked. Pippen and Harden still were handcuffed to- gether when found. Judge Foster blamed the Inter- national Labor Defense for the lynching.
