| Transcript: | Edgar Moses was acquitted today of a charge of murder in connection with the mob In April 1926 of Lily Cobb negro woman. The verdict was reached late yesterday and reported today that four other men Including John Vade reputed former cyclops of the the Onenta chapter or of the Ku Klux Klan which the state attempted to link with the slayings are held under bail pending trial on murder charges. The state charged that Moses was a member of a band of hooded men that went to the Cobb home to flog the woman. In the melee following their arrival the woman was killed and her husband escaped. He has not since been located. There were many floggings in this part of Alabama at that time. The defense rested Its case after introducing several key witnesses and an attempt to impeach the testimony of John Paine negro who identified Moses as the man shot at by Cobb when the hooded men closed in on his home. Moses was admitted to a Birmingham hospital the next day. His hand had been almost severed near the wrist by a charge of the shot. |
