FOUR REACH SAFETY IN 3 DAYS’ CHASE Alabama Governor States Posted Rewards Apply to Whites if They Caused Riots. Two White Men and Four Negroes Slain in Row Over Transaction July Fourth. (Associated Press Leased Wire) EMELLE, Ala., July 7.-Rifles and pistols were sheathed today as this strife-torn village completed the burial of its dead-two white men and four negroes-slain in dis. orders arising from an Independ- ence day debt dispute. Four other negroes, each with a prize of $300 on his head, still were at large, but virtually all of several hundred white possement had given up a three-day manhunt, instituted after a negro family en- gaged in a gun fight with a white family over the payment for an au- tomobile battery. Official rewards which have fugitives, been posted Bibb Graves for the four negro Governor said at Montgomery, “are not merely for negroes who killed white men” but would be paid “for the arrest and conviction of any- body, white or black, responsible at Emelle.” Tragedy Attends Search An unidentified negro man and Viola Dial, a negro woman, were the last two killed. They were shot to death yesterday when the com- mands of white searchers were not obeyed. Previously Grover Boyd and Charlie Marrs, both white men, were killed and in turn a ne- gro was lynched and another fat- ally shot.
