NEGRO KILLED NEAR ABERNATHY CONSTABLE NORWOOD WAS ATTEMPTING TO MAKE AN AR. REST WHEN THE NEGRO SHOT AT HIM AND WAS KILLED BY THE OFFICER.
Information reached the city yesterday of the killing of a negro, name unknown, near (Abernathy by Constable Norwood. It appears that Mr. Norwood had a warrant for the arrest of the negro. He was attempting to make the arrest when the negro showed fight. He ran off but turned and pulled his gun and shot at the officer, who returned the fire and killed the negro. The details of the killing are very meager. Coroner Rogers was called to Abernathy to hold an inquest but did not do so when he arrived there and found out the particulars. Constable Norwood was put under arrest and his trial came up before a Justice of the Peace yesterday, but the result of the same could not be learned at the time of going to press. Mr. Norwood is reported to have been perfectly justifiable The preliminary trial of Mr. Norwood will show whether or not he was justifiable in what he did.
