NEGRO RAPIST IS LODGED IN JAIL t Assaulted White Woman Near Keller- man Ten Days Ago-Arrested at Trussville. t John Hatcher, the negro who at- I tempted to rape Mrs. Ida Spurgeon, near Kellerman about 10 days ago, was lodged in the county jail here ) today. Immediately after his assault 1 on Mrs. Spurgeon, the negro made his escape. He (was captured Sunday at Trussville by Constable Oscar ‘Willard of Kellerman, who had been working on the case. Mrs. Spurgeon was badly injured but will recover from the effects of her encounter with the negro. Mrs. Spurgeon, who lives near Kellerman was at home with her little baby when the negro made an at- tempt to gain an entrance into the house. He made an effort to push open the door but Mrs. Spurgeon fought hard and managed to prevent an entrance into the house. Later the negro left the place. Fearing that he would return later with an ax and break open the door, Mrs. Spurgeon took her baby in her arms and started to run to the house 01 her nearest neighbor, about one-quarter of a mile away. About halfway between the two places, she was attacked by the negro in a valley and was very roughly handled. Her face was badly lacerated and she was otherwise injured. In addition, the negro took about $8 in money from her. The assault took place Saturday, December 5, and created much excitement in the neighborhood. As soon as Officer Willard captured the negro, he hastened with him to the county jail here.
