RACE RIOT ENDS IN ALABAMA TOWN Four Negroes, Two White People Killed in Riot Over Small Debt EMELLE, Ala., July 7. (AP) Rifles and pistols were sheathed today as this strife-torn village completed the burial of its dead– two white men and four negroes slain in disorders arising from an Independence Day debt dis- pute. Four other negroes, each with a prize of $300 on his head, still were at large, but virtually all of several hundred white possement had given up a 3-day manhunt, in- stituted after a negro family en- gaged in a. gunfight with a white family over the payment for an automobile battery. Official rewards which have been posted for the four negro fugitives, Gov. Bibb Graves said at Montgomery, “are not merely for negroes who killed white men” but would be paid “for the arrest and conviction of anybody, white or black, responsible at Emelle.” One Lynched An unidentified negro man and Viola Dial, a negro woman, were the last two killed. They were shot to death yesterday when the commands of white searchers were not obeyed. Previously Grover Boyd and Charlie Marrs, both white men, were killed and in turn a negro was lynched and an- other fatally shot. Both of the negroes were kinsmen of Tom Robertson, who with three sons, fled and has not been apprehended. The unidentified negro killed yesterday. officers said, replied with bullets and wounded Clarence a Bush, a white man, upon being ordered to submit to a search. The negro woman was slain when her husband failed to halt his auto- mobile at the command of posse- men. Battle Over Battery On Independence Day Tom Rob- ertson and his sons attacked Clar- I ence Boyd after he had reclaimed an automobile battery for which the negroes had failed to pay him. Grover Boyd. an uncle of Clar- 1 ence, ran to his aid and was fa- tally shot by one of the negroes. o A crowd gathered, lynched Jacob I Robertson, who had participated 8 in the attack. fired the home of o John Robertson a relative, and t shot him to death when he killed Charlie Marrs, a white posseman. and wounded Jim Ayers, another white man.
